The DL on HDL

I like to tell people I moved to the Netherlands for a dog. My first trip to Amsterdam was to take care of an adorable maltipoo named Pretzel, but I fell in love with the city (and the dog). In February of 2024, I flew to Schiphol, and have been living here ever since.

As an American in the Netherlands, I see the country with fresh eyes, which has inspired many articles about unique initiatives: the bottle deposit scheme, an urban agriculture experiment, and the beloved fish doorbell. I’ve also been able to do some in-person reporting for Nature Careers on mobile labs, tabling at festivals, and collecting human waste. I love meeting researchers and hearing about their work firsthand.

Born and raised in Washington D.C., I graduated from Wesleyan University in Connecticut in May of 2022 with degrees in biology and psychology, and planned to be a science teacher. I’m currently pursuing a Master’s in Science Education and Communication at Utrecht University. As a journalist, I’m still teaching–just not in the way I originally thought.
